Music DNA – 1971

March 7, 2015 — by The Social Clymer

Here we are at year 2 of the Music DNA project.  Already, there are more songs from some amazing musical genres. Here’s the timeline…

A couple of highlights in the 1971 bunch include:

  • Gladys Knight’s “If I Were Your Woman” – I have always loved “Midnight Train to Georgia,” but doing the research on this project uncovered this song and makes me want to be a Pip more than ever.
  • Gordon Lightfoot’s “If You Could Read My Mind” – This is 70s storytelling at its best.  It’s got heroes, heartbreak and a helluva lot more.
  • “What’s Going On?” and “Mercy, Mercy Me” are two of my top 100 songs of all time.  Maybe even higher!  Marvin Gaye is amazing and these were two of his best.
  • And “Superstar” from Jesus Christ Superstar.  I remember that song being played more as a sports anthem from back in those days.  The best part about that song is that it’s sung by Murray Head.  Yes, THAT Murray Head of “One Night in Bangkok” fame. You might just see him in a Music DNA list again.

Take a listen for yourself…

I hope you find something here that takes you back to another time or maybe you’ll find a old song that’s new to you.

What was your favorite music from 1971?
