We’ve all seen the cycle… fame, excess, disgrace, isolation and redemption. One of the most recent public figures to hit the tail end of that cycle is Mike Tyson. Yes, believe it or not, we are living in a Tysonaissance. Since his days of being convicted of rape, serving time in jail, taking bites out of Evander Holyfield, Tyson has reemerged in pop culture as a parody of himself. His cameos in the Hangover movies have humanized him in a way that the crimes demonized him.
The most recent entry in the Tysonaissance is an animated show targeted at adults being developed for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim lineup – Mike Tyson Mysteries. I first saw this a couple months ago and thought… now what in the hell could this be? Hardly seems appropriate for a children’s show. Now knowing that it’s an Adult Swim production makes a lot more sense. It’s like taking Scooby Doo, the Mr. T Show, Grape Ape and any other number of 70s/80s mystery cartoons and mashing them together with Tyson as the hook. Here’s the trailer from San Diego Comic Con.
So, you can see that there IS a lot of smart and funny surrounding Tyson, who exists primarily to be the punchline. I confess, I’ll probably watch, but I can certainly understand if this might turn someone’s stomach, too.
What do you think about the Tysonaissance and his reinvention as an animated “hero?”
