Coming Soon – Dracula as Hero in Dracula Untold

June 29, 2014 — by The Social Clymer

Let’s put together a little checklist.  Do you like history?  Check.  Do you like Game of Thrones?  Check.  Do you like gothic myths?  Sure! Well, it seems like the upcoming film Dracula Untold might be just what you’re looking for.

From the look of the trailer, there are some historical(ish) things happening here.  There really was a Vlad Tepes (Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia. Tepes was a little nickname given to him by his admirers after his “death.”  In English, it means Impaler.)  Also historical(ish) is the fact that Vlad hated the Turks.  His claim to fame was battling against the Ottomans.  In his youth, he and a brother had been sent to the Ottomans as hostages to prove and maintain the loyalty of his father, Vlad II. After his father’s death, he ascended to his father’s position and eventually engaged in open war with the Ottomans during the siege of the Balkans.  Sorry, I’m a history guy… I could talk about this all day.

As you probably know, Vlad is also the guy that is considered to be the birth of the Dracula legend.  So, that’s what the film addresses.  Here’s a guy that hates him some Turks.  The Turks are actively trying to invade his homeland.  There’s only one way to beat them back… becoming a blood sucking super soldier, of course.  Here’s the trailer.

I’m a sucker for these kinds of movies.  History, action.  Oh, I almost forgot!  AND you’ve got a great, super-creepy Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister, or Sardo Numspa, as I like to remember him).  What could possibly go wrong?

Let me know what you think!  Theater, stream or pass?
